* There was some confusion over the identification of the bodies of John Ross and William Knight. One of the first bodies recovered was identified as John Ross, but the one of the last to be recovered was thought to be John Ross and the first was then thought to be William Knight. See Recovery of the Bodies.

Mr Smallman's list
LIST OF ALL THE MEN INVOLVED IN THE BADDESLEY PIT EXPLOSION
After the inquests into the deaths had taken place the Relief Fund Committee decided that all the rescuers involved in the explosion deserved recognition for their brave efforts on the 1st and 2nd of May 1882. They therefore asked Reuben Smallman, the mining engineer who had taken charge of the rescue operations to provide a list of all the men involved. The men, both those who survived and the representatives of those who died, were later presented with a special commemorative Bible, suitably inscribed in the flyleaf. Fortunately this list has survived and was amongst the Relief Fund documents purchased by Nuneaton and North Warwickshire Family History Society in 1999. The original documents are now on permanent loan at Warwick County Record Office but copies are held at Atherstone library and by myself on behalf of NNWFHS. The list is transcribed in full below with kind permission of NNWFHS.
